Emergency Prayer Alert-Djbouti and Eriteria Neighboring East African Nations Clash Raises Fears of an all-out Military ConfrontationWIN PRAYER ALERTIntercessors are needed to pray for Djibouti and Eritrea after recent deadly clashes between the two neighboring East African nations. Eritrea moved troops to the Ras Doumeira area at Djibouti’s northern border on Tuesday, June 10, 2008, sparking skirmishes that resulted in the death of a dozen Djiboutian soldiers and wounding dozens more, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported. “The situation has remained calm, but both countries are sending additional troops to the area, threatening renewed violence,” the Famine Early Warning Systems Network warned, and IRINnews.org reported. The clash was the first since tension between the two neighbors escalated on April 16, 2008 and raised fears of an all-out military confrontation that would plunge the already tense situation in this region into further chaos, AFP reported. Djibouti and Eritrea had already clashed twice over the border area at the southern end of the Red Sea. In April 1996, they almost went to war after a Djibouti official accused Eritrea of shelling the town of Ras Doumeira, AFP reported. In 1999, Eritrea accused Djibouti of siding with Asmara’s arch-enemy Ethiopia, while Djibouti accused its neighbor of supporting Djiboutian rebels and having plans to take over the Ras Doumeira region.
Djibouti population of 632,000 is comprised of 93.9 percent Muslims and only 4.7 percent of its citizens are Christians. In Eritrea, the government severely restricts freedom of religion for unregistered groups and violates the rights of some registered groups. Since May 2004, the only authorized religions recognized by the state are Eritrean Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Evangelical Lutheran and Islam. About 2,000 Christians, including pastors and priests from both Protestant and Orthodox churches, are now under arrest in police stations, military camps and jails all across Eritrea, according to Open Doors. According to Window International Network’s Praying Through The Window 9 prayer calendar, the day of prayer for Djibouti is on day 17 and for Eritrea it is on day 29. Pray for:
