Prayer is needed for Gaza Christians after unknown assailants recently detonated a bomb outside a Christian school. The attack caused no injuries, but it sparked fear among the strip’s tiny Christian minority, Compass Direct News reported.

Armed assailants broke into the El-Manara school in Gaza City’s Zaitoon Quarter at 2 a.m. Saturday, May 31, 2008, according to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights (PCHR). The attackers tied down two school guards and beat them before stealing a bus belonging to the Palestinian Bible Society, the PCHR said, Compass reported. The PCHR said that unknown gunmen had carried out a similar attack against the school on February 21, 2008.

A Palestinian Christian leader who requested anonymity for security reasons said that police had reportedly arrested one of the assailants. But he said it was too early in the investigation to say who was behind the attack. “It created a lot of fear, and some people are terrified,” he told Compass.

Gaza Strip RocketThe government’s apparent inability to find and prosecute the instigators of previous attacks was a legitimate cause for fear, the Christian leader said.

Last October, the manager of Gaza’s Bible Society bookshop, Rami Ayyad, was kidnapped and killed. According to Ayyad’s widow, police initially told her family that they had arrested the killer but changed their story a week later and denied having anyone in custody. Ayyad’s murderer has not yet been found, Compass reported.

Also in Gaza City, a bomb was detonated outside of the Zahwa Rosary School, run by Catholic nuns, at 4 a.m. May 16, 2008. No one was hurt, the Associated Press (AP) reported. “Christians in Gaza are targeted,” the Palestinian Christian told Compass.

About 3,200 Christians live in Gaza among 1.4 million Muslims, the AP reported. According to Window International Network’s Praying Through The Window 9 prayer calendar, the day of prayer for the Gaza Strip is on day 31.

Pray for:

  • Protection and safety for the small number of Christians in Gaza.
  • Peace in Gaza and freedom for all religions.
  • Healing for the two guards attacked at the school.
  • The Palestinian Bible Society to be a shining light in the midst of darkness.
  • Christians globally to be aware of the suffering of their brothers and sisters in Gaza and will take action to help them. (Joshua 1:14)
