Christian leaders in Sudan have made an urgent plea for prayer after a Darfur rebel force launched a surprise attack on Khartoum on May 10, 2008.

Sudan has arrested Abdel Aziz el-Nur Ashr, a senior commander of the rebel Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), which launched the attack in which at least 200 rebels, soldiers and civilians have been killed so far this month from the fighting, Reuters reported.

“We need your prayers, our city Khartoum is under attack by the Darfur rebel group and some Chadian troops,” a Sudanese Christian leader wrote in an e-mail to Window International Network. “I was cut away of my family for one day and five hours. … The Sudan Armed Forces are (now) in control of the city. Pray that the situation will be normal.”

Human rights groups have accused Khartoum of carrying out mass arrests and torturing suspects. The government denies the accusations.

The United Nations. children’s agency UNICEF said the Sudanese government had promised its access to more than 80 children, some as young as 10, detained after the Khartoum attack, Reuters reported. The government said JEM had used the children as soldiers. JEM denied that.

DarfurSudan is ranked No. 20 among nations that are the worst persecutors of Christians based on Open Doors 2007 “World Watch List.”

The civil war in the South of Sudan ended in a 2005 peace deal that provided autonomy and set up a government led by the former rebel group known as Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, BosNewsLife reported.

However, Christians in several parts of the country still face restrictions in practicing their faith, especially in the predominantly Muslim/Arab area of northern Sudan, BosNewsLife reported.

According to Window International Network’s Praying Through The Window 9 prayer calendar, the day of prayer for Sudan is on day 2.

Pray for:

  • Peace and for the fighting to end.
  • The salvation of Khartoum and Justice and Equality Movement leaders.
  • Christians of Sudan to be protected from harm
  • Pray that the Gospel may be heard and received by all.
  • Comfort and spiritual growth for the Church in Southern Sudan despite having to live in constant fear.
