10/40 Window Emergency Prayer Alert-Lebanon-Nation teeters on possible civil war as government forces fights Hezbollah

Urgent prayer is needed for Lebanon as the Middle Eastern nation teeters on a possible civil war due to escalating fighting between government forces and the terrorist group Hezbollah, stemming from their political conflict. The fighting, the worst internal strife since the 1975-90 civil war, was triggered Wednesday, May 7, 2008, after the government took decisions targeting Hezbollah’s military communications network. The group said the government had declared war. The crisis between the Hezbollah-led opposition, backed by Iran and Syria, and Prime Minister Fouad Siniora’s anti-Syrian cabinet, backed by the United States and its Arab allies, has paralyzed the country and left it without a president since November 2007.

Urgent prayer is needed for Lebanon as the Middle Eastern nation teeters on a possible civil war due to escalating fighting between government forces and the terrorist group Hezbollah, stemming from their political conflict.

At least 47 people have been killed and more than 188 wounded since the fighting broke out last week between pro-government gunmen and fighters loyal to Hezbollah, a Shiite political movement with a powerful guerrilla army, CNN reported on Monday, May 12, 2008.

The fighting, the worst internal strife since the 1975-90 civil war, was triggered Wednesday, May 7, 2008, after the government took decisions targeting Hezbollah’s military communications network. By doing this, the group said the government had declared war.

Hezbollah and its allies have maintained roadblocks that have paralyzed much of Beirut since the fighting started, including barricades on routes to the airport, Reuters reported.

The crisis between the Hezbollah-led opposition, backed by Iran and Syria, and Prime Minister Fouad Siniora’s anti-Syrian cabinet, backed by the United States and its Arab allies, has paralyzed the country and left it without a president since November 2007.

Operation World estimated that 70% of Lebanon is 59.8 percent Muslim, with Christians making up 31.9 percent of its population.

According to Window International Network’s Praying Through The Window 9 prayer calendar, the day of prayer for Lebanon is on the 20th of the month.

Pray for:

  • Peace and the fighting to end.
  • Hezbollah to lose the support of the Lebanese population through the group’s continued violence. Pray for God to defeat Hezbollah’s goal to create an Iranian-style Islamic republic in Lebanon and removal of all non-Islamic influences from the area.
  • Lebanese Christians to be protected from harm, and that the Gospel may be heard and received by all. Pray that the drive to institute stricter Islamic law would be blocked and equal treatment for all faiths would prevail.
  • Lebanon is still the only nation in the Middle East where people are free to decide to change their religion. Pray that this freedom would be maintained.
