At the start of the campaigning for the April 20, 2008 vote, President Boni Yayi called for peaceful, transparent, just and credible elections. A total of 4 million voters will be able to choose thousands of village, neighborhood, town and municipal representatives. Intercessors are needed to pray for the small West African nation of Benin as campaigning for forthcoming local elections has been marked by tight competitions, an outbreak of violence and doubts over how politicians can change daily life, Voice of America (VOA) reported.

At the start of the campaigning for the April 20, 2008 vote, President Boni Yayi called for peaceful, transparent, just and credible elections. A total of 4 million voters will be able to choose thousands of village, neighborhood, town and municipal representatives.

Yayi said he wanted the process to be a celebration of democracy, with rival politicians being adversaries and not enemies, VOA reported.

But following the death of a mayor in the central town of Glazoue, riots broke out on April 11, 2008 led by ruling party militants who thought foul play had caused their mayor’s death.  The mayor had been seeking re-election, but apparently died of natural causes. Another person died of wounds sustained during the violence, VOA reported.

Many had high hopes when President Yayi took power two years ago, promising an economic overhaul. But widespread poverty persists and frustrations are growing with rising prices, VOA reported.

A former Muslim, Yayi, who was elected in 2006, is now an evangelical Christian and has sought to use his expertise in economics to further help his country out of poverty, according to 24-7 Prayer.

Pray for:

  • The elections to be free of violence and fair.
  • Officials to be elected who will rule righteously and fear God.
  • President Yayi to have integrity and wisdom in his leadership.
  • More people follow traditional ethnic religions in Benin than in any other African nation. Pray that the freedom of knowing Jesus would break into people’s lives.
  • Christians to effectively reach out to the Muslim urban population (20 percent).
