Prayer warriors are needed to come alongside the Nepali Christian community, which has called for a “Global Day of Prayer for Nepal” on April 5-6, 2008 to focus on the upcoming constitutional election and lasting peace, reconciliation and healing of the Asian nation. Scheduled for April 10, 2008, Nepal’s general election is the first nationwide ballot since a November 2006 peace accord ended a decade-long insurgency in the Himalayan kingdom by Maoist communist rebels fighting for a republic, Bloomberg reported. Voters will elect an assembly to draw up a new constitution and decide at its first meeting whether to scrap the monarchy after almost 240 years. However, violence has been intensifying in recent weeks, leading up to the election, Bloomberg reported. The government must bring to justice the perpetrators of a March 29, 2008 mosque attack in Biratnagar, a city southeast of the capital, Kathmandu, that killed two people, the United Nations said. “There has already violence started in many places,” a Christian leader from Nepal wrote in an e-mail to Window International Network. “People are thinking the election will solve all the problems, but the problems are just beyond (the election).” Once the world’s only Hindu kingdom, Nepal was declared a secular state in 2006, Bloomberg reported. More than 80 percent of Nepal’s 29 million people are Hindu, almost 11 percent Buddhist and 4 percent Muslim, according to U.S. government data citing a 2001 census. Praise for:
