However, Bhutan is ranked No. 5 in the 2008 Open Doors “World Watch List” of nations that persecute Christians the worst.

“Two of our relatives are behind bars for the last 14 months, and we are just praying to the Lord for their early release,” the Bhutanese Christian continued. “They were caught while they were showing The Jesus film to some (in) the neighborhood.”

Until just a few decades ago, the secluded and mountainous country was a medieval agrarian society, with no paved roads, no electricity, no hospitals and no telephones, the Associated Press (AP) reported. Goods were bartered rather than bought. But much has changed in recent years—television, for example, was introduced in 1999, the AP reported.

Now comes the historic parliamentary elections, in which the country’s first elected prime minister should take office a day later.

Under a draft constitution, the king, 27-year-old Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck, will become head of state, but Parliament will have the power to impeach him by a two-thirds vote, the AP reported.

The Communist Party of Bhutan has threatened to disrupt the elections to Bhutan’s National Assembly or the lower house of Parliament that would formalize the nation’s transformation from an absolute monarchy to parliamentary democracy, Thaindian.com reported.

Mahayana Buddhism is the state religion in Bhutan, where Christians comprise a fraction of 1 percent of the population that ranges between 700,000 and 2.2 million people, the AP reported.

The law provides for freedom of religion. However, the government limited this right in practice by barring non-Buddhist missionaries from entering the country, limiting construction of non-Buddhist religious buildings, and restricting the celebration of some non-Buddhist religious festivals and limiting others, according to International Christian Concern (ICC).

The government also prohibits religious conversion from Buddhism to other religions. Foreign missionaries were not permitted to proselytize, ICC said.

Praise for:

Intercessors are urged to come alongside a pastor and president of the Chinese House Church Alliance who recently issued an open letter to the international community, revealing sufferings and persecutions he has endured from authorities.

Since his conversion to Christianity in 1986 Pastor Zhang Mingxuan has been arrested, beaten and incarcerated 12 times, Assist News Service (ANS) reported. Most recently, Public Security Bureau (PSB) and state officials forced Mingxuan to close the orphanage he had been running with his two sons.

Mingxuann and the orphans have continued to look for places of residence, but have been refused several times by landlords who have been threatened by officials not to lease to the pastor. Currently, Zhang has been separated from his two sons, who were also forced to move by PSB officials, ANS reported.

However, Mingxuan has received no response.

Thousands of civilians fled the capital N’Djamena early Monday, February 4, 2008, after rebel forces said they had pulled back from the city following two days of fighting against government forces, BosNewsLife reported.

The clashes, centered on the presidential palace, also forced Christian humanitarian group World Vision to move staff and their families to safe houses and to close its office after it was attacked over the weekend of February 2, BosNewsLife reported.

World Vision, which has some 250 staff members in country, said the African nation could turn “from a political crisis to a humanitarian disaster if fighting does not stop soon.”

Chad’s civil war pits Sudan-backed Muslim rebels against the pro-French government of President Idriss Deby.

Itno declared a “stunning victory” Wednesday, February 5 over rebel forces and said he was back in control, as Red Cross officials put the toll from weekend clashes at more than 160 dead, Agency France Presse reported.

“We have total control not only of the capital but of the country,” said Deby at his first press conference since hundreds of insurgents poured into Ndjamena in a bid to overthrow his regime.

The rebels accuse France of using tanks and helicopters, part of a French contingent based in Chad, to help President Deby beat off their assault on N’Djamena, Reuters reported. France denies its forces were directly involved in combat.

The rebel offensive began from bases in Sudan, in what observers described as “a lightning desert march” to the center of the capital, marking the biggest threat to Deby’s rule since he himself took power in a coup in 1990.

The rebels are being sponsored by Khartoum and Saudi Arabia to effect regime change in Chad and install a pro-Arab Islamist regime that will be loyal to Khartoum and thus resistant to occupation by “infidels,” according to the Jubilee Campaign.

“If these rebels are successful in taking N’Djamena, it will be a major coup for Sudan, Wahhabi Islam and Arabism, with Libya possibly benefiting also,” wrote World Defense Review columnist Walid Phares. “It would be a crushing blow for liberty and security in Chad and the wider region and would doubtless herald an era of unprecedented persecution for the Chadian Church.”

However, rebel leaders, many of them former close allies of the president, say they are fighting for democracy, after Deby changed the constitution in June 2005 to allow unlimited presidential terms, and declared himself the winner of the last poll in 2006, widely viewed as fraudulent, the Voice of America network reported.

“We did not expect things to happen this quickly,” World Vision’s Chad Director Levourne Passiri said in a statement, BosNewsLife reported. “I fear that the entire capital could be destroyed. There is already much human and economic damage. Many civilians have been killed.”

Meanwhile, Chad’s government is currently digging a 3-metre deep trench around the capital to prevent a repeat of the February 4, 2008 attack, when rebels in pickup trucks rolled into N’Djamena and fought two days of heavy battles, Reuters reported.

World Vision said it fears that if a negotiated ceasefire “or a mediated transition of power” are not achieved soon, “this could trigger factional fighting that would displace (more) civilians.”

The organization has worked in Chad since 1985 and says it currently serves some 400,000 people. Community development programs are located in central and southern Chad, and focus on health and nutrition, education, HIV/AIDS prevention, water and sanitation, micro loans to poor entrepreneurs, and agricultural improvements to prevent frequent food shortages.

Meanwhile, a Polish missionary priest serving in Chad has reported that Muslim rebels are threatening Christians in the African nation.

“The rebel leader has said Chad is to be a Muslim country,” said Jedrzej Piasek, a priest who served one year in Chad’s Doba diocese, CWNews.com reported. “He does not want priests and consecrated (religion). The first thing he will do after winning the civil war is expel all missionaries.”

With 200 people groups and 120 languages, Chad is one of the most unreached countries in Africa and presents a challenge to the Gospel, according to Operation World. Additionally, Many Chadian Muslims have been recruited as mercenaries to attack and kill Christians in Nigeria.

Pray for:

Order to be restored in Chad.

The refugees to get the food and medicine that is much needed.

Those fleeing into neighboring countries to be ministered to by Christians in those countries.

The salvation of President Idriss Deby and rebel forces leaders.

The country is almost equally divided between Muslim northerners, who are politically more powerful, and increasingly more marginalized Christian/ethnic religion southerners. Pray for continued peace and freedom in all ethnic and religious communities.

Islam is growing in influence and numbers in Chad. More and more Muslim nations are sending missionaries to Chad and more mosques are being built. Pray that Christians might be equipped to witness to this community. Pray for people from a Muslim background to respond to the Gospel.

Safety for the minority Christian community in Chad.

Pray that the churches in Chad would grow and mature in their faith and discipleship. Many congregations mix Christianity up with other ideas and beliefs and can be legalistic. Pray that the Holy Spirit would be working to bring true freedom in their lives.

There are more unreached peoples in Chad than anywhere else in Africa. Pray for ongoing support and protection for missionaries already working here. Pray also that God would call many to dedicate years to learning the languages and building the Kingdom in Chad.

A second, apparently synchronized blast moments later in a residential district of the city, killed three people, two of them reported to be children, The Los Angeles Times reported.

The dual attacks underscored the deteriorating security situation faced by the new government now being formed in the wake of February 18, 2008 parliamentary elections that swept opposition parties to power, the newspaper observed.

The explosions also marked the third time in two months that attackers hit government or military targets in Lahore, the country’s cultural capital which until recently had escaped the wave of attacks elsewhere in the country, the Times reported.

The bombings come amid a spate of violence that authorities are blaming on Taliban and Al Qaeda-linked militants, spreading beyond their strongholds along the Afghan border, the Associated Press (AP) reported.

There have been at least seven suicide attacks in the weeks since the elections, which were won by the opposition parties of the late Benazir Bhutto and fellow former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Bhutto was killed in a suicide attack in Rawalpindi on December 27, 2007.

President Pervez Musharraf condemned the most recent bombings as “savage act” and said the “acts of terrorism cannot deter government’s resolve to fight the scourge with full force,” state media reported.

Musharraf has summoned the new parliament to meet on March 17, 2008, setting up a showdown with his rivals that could potentially further destabilize the nuclear-armed nation, Agency France Presse reported.

Asif Ali Zardari, Bhutto’s widower and political successor, and Sharif have agreed to form a coalition government that is expected to take on Musharraf, who seized power in a coup in 1999, but they must also grapple with the tide of violence engulfing the country, the Pakistan Christian Post reported.

“Terrorists are trying to put pressure on the government-in-making. But I am sure the government-in-making will also have the same resolve to deal with terrorism,” interior ministry spokesman Javed Cheema told the Post.

Pray that when the enemy comes against innocent people of Pakistan that the Spirit of the Lord will raise up a standard against the enemy by sending forth weapons from His arsenal in heaven. (Exodus 15:3, 6-7 and Isaiah 59:19 KJV)

First, there is a sustained and intense media campaign against the Algerian Church. Second, seven fellowships are known to have been closed by authorities in the last year. Third, several Christian Believers have been formally charged over matters related to their Christian faith. However, Muslims are coming to Christ in Algeria as never before, mostly in mountain villages among Berber ethnic groups. The Algerian church has grown to about 70,000 adherents. Seventy percent of the Christians are under the age of 30. Hundreds stand in line for more than an hour just to attend services in one church building.

Algerian Christian Leaders Request Prayer as they are feeling Pressured

WIN PRAYER ALERT

Algerian Christian leaders have asked for prayerful support from Christians worldwide as Christian Believers are being pressured.

“First, there is a sustained and intense media campaign against the Church,” a Middle East Concern (MEC) official wrote in a recent e-mail received by Window International Network. “On most days in January, major Algerian newspapers carried articles expressing concern about the growth of the Church. The amount of detail in some articles suggests that informants have been attending some fellowships.

Another way Christians have been harassed according to Algerian Christian leaders seven fellowships have been closed recently by authorities.

“Several church leaders were told to bring an official license issued by a government committee that was established by legal decree in 2007, but it has not yet been formed or held its first meeting,” said the MEC official, who noted that the affected fellowships are in Ait Amar, Ait Djemaa, Bachloul, Boughni, Ouargla, Tiaret and Tizi Ouzou.

“Third, several Believers have been formally charged,” the MEC official continued. “There were several trials in 2007, but no Christians were convicted. On February 5, 2008, three Believers accused of insulting Islam were told that they will be sentenced to three years in prison and fined 5,000 Euros. The official written sentence (was) expected Tuesday, February 12, 2008.”

The MEC official added that another Believer has been told to report for a further hearing on March 5, 2008, event though the witnesses that testified against him admitted that he didn’t know the accused.

“He has been told that he will be imprisoned for one year and fined heavily,” the MEC official said. “In a third case, another Believer has been told his trial will be held on April 2, 2008. This date has been changed several times.”

The Algerian constitution declares Islam to be the state religion. In 2006, the government confined non-Muslim worship to specific buildings approved by the state, increased requirements for the registration of religious organizations and increased punishments for anyone who proselytizes Muslims, according to 2007 International Religious Freedom Report.

Algeria has a population of 33 million, with more than 99 percent of the citizens Sunni Muslim and only 0.3% percent Christians at this time.

The Algerian people are trying to move beyond a bloody 15-year Islamic insurgency that has claimed as many as 200,000 lives, Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) News reported. While the government continues its fight against Al Qaeda and other Islamist terrorists, another battle is being waged for the hearts and souls of Algerians.

Muslims are coming to Christ in Algeria as never before, mostly in mountain villages among Berber ethnic groups.

“The Church is still growing fast; I have no doubt about it,” Algerian pastor Youssef Ourahmane said. “The TV has a tremendous impact on the lives of the people there—especially Arabic language stations where for the first time many Algerians watch and see and hear Muslim converts who are preaching, who are teaching and telling them stories and also getting some facts about Islam and their faith in the Koran.”

Christianity existed in Algeria long before Islam, but disappeared in the 12th century. Today, Islam is the dominant faith, but Christianity is making a comeback..

The Algerian Church has grown to about 70,000 adherents. Seventy percent of the Christians are under the age of 30. Hundreds stand in line for more than an hour just to attend services in one church building.

Even though proselytizing Muslims is against the law in Algeria, one evangelist—a former Muslim—travels on trains playing a guitar, singing Christian songs and telling passengers about Christ. The train ride lasts about five to six hours, so he says he has a captive audience because passengers can’t leave.

Ourahmane told CBN News that overcoming fear of Muslims has been crucial to church growth.
“That has been the key and I think the church really is a missionary minded church now,” he said. “They want to see more churches planted and they want to see the Algerian church become an impact not just for Algeria, but for other countries (such as neighboring Morocco).”

However, Algerian Christians are facing increased persecution in their country. Last year, government officials shut down at least five house churches and several Christians were arrested.

“We expect it will be a tougher situation because now there are complaints from the religious leaders,” explained Ourahmane. “Imams in Algeria they complain against what is happening, the evangelization of the Algerians.”

Their pressure has already led to a new, tougher law: a hefty fine and imprisonment for those found guilty of shaking the faith of a Muslim. The law has yet to be implemented.

But Pastor Ourahmane suggested laws cannot stop the amazing move of God in the North African nation.

“There’s no doubt with what is happening today—with God arising men and women who are gifted in preaching, church planting, worship and other things as well. It’s an amazing sign of hope,” he told CBN News.

Praise for:

Thank God that the Algerian Church has grown to about 70,000 adherents, and that Muslims are coming to Christ in Algeria as never before.

Pray for:

The media attention will have a positive impact on the Church, drawing more people to respond to the love and truth of Jesus.

The closed fellowships to be allowed to reopen.

All Algerian Christians to be able to worship and fellowship with other Believers.

Algerian Christians not to be sentenced to jail for their Christian faith. Pray that the Algerian Christians on trial on March 5 and April 2 will be acquitted. Pray for all officials involved to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ and respond to His love.

The salvation of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and leaders of terrorist groups such as Al Qaeda.

The Berber people could make up as much as 40 percent of the population, but the Arab majority have tried to impose their culture on them and stopped them from using their own language. Thousands in the Kabyle region have become Christians and meet openly in their villages. Pray for these churches that they would be protected from persecution and grow in their faith in God.

Christians globally to pray for our Brothers and Sisters in Algeria.
