First let me make something clear. I have NOT read this book. However, I wanted to use it as an opportunity to open a discussion on a very important topic.
Here’s a quote about the book Reimagining Church by Frank Viola:
Viola believes that to bring the church back on track, both clergy and denominations must be completely abolished. Churches should not have buildings nor should they worry about doctrinal statements. Such radical ideas will best be received by Emergent and postmodern readers.
Yes, reformation is coming to the church. No, it’s not coming in the form of a massive void and reversal from biblical government. Quite the opposite is going to take place, much to the irritation of many an anarchist. It’s stunning how many are running from churches and, in effect, removing
themselves from their shepherds and apostolic leaders.
At a time when people are proclaiming that God is done with superstar Christian leaders, I firmly believe we’ll actually see a new wave of promotion in the body take place. God has always highlighted men and women in significant and even uncomfortable ways, and he isn’t about to stop now.
That being said, I also believe in the ‘nameless, faceless’ movement. How can this be? It’s really not a contradiction when we realize that we will all ‘go low’ and will not seek promotion for selfish reasons. Millions will not be known and will intercede and serve with passion.
However, it’s critical that we do seek out opportunity to have significant influence. Really, that’s what prayer is. That’s what preaching and worship leading are. Our servant leadership results in influencing and changing people and atmospheres.
This pursuit of godly influence will result in strong apostolic leaders leading with great strength and gifting. They will be the tip of the sword and will make the way easier for the masses to follow into.
In many situations, leaders will be gifted and called to lead many, as Moses and Joshua did, among many others in scripture. The body must be in position and ready to respond to apostolic teaching, impartation, training and direction.
Leadership is ordained of God. Leaders have followers- and it’s not a haphazard, loose relationship. It’s intentional, submitted and unified.
My book Covens in the Church deals with this issue and I’d strongly recommend it to you. It’s inexpensive and a quick read, but it’s already changed several people’s lives quite powerfully.
Oh, and regarding the idea that we don’t need buildings. I’m good with meeting in a field somewhere with a few hundred other worshipers. But, if it rains, is below 40 degrees, is above 100 degrees, snows, is very windy or if lightening is striking anywhere near, we better get indoors. So, yep, we need buildings!
